What a chromatic tuner does
A chromatic tuner finds the nearest semitone instead of selecting a preset string. The large readout shows the note and octave; cents show how far the sound is from that note at the chosen A4 reference pitch.
Play a single sustained note. Flat means the pitch is below the nearest note; Sharp means it is above. The supported note range is B0–C6. When the pitch cannot be identified, the readout shows —. Noise, chords and the start of a plucked note can make detection uncertain.
Note frequencies
This table lists C4–B4, one octave of equal-tempered notes. Changing A4 in settings scales every frequency. Press ▶ to hear a note; Keep playing also applies to these reference tones.

Which tuner should I use?
Use a string tuner when you want named targets for an instrument. Use this chromatic page when you already know the note and octave you need.
FAQ
Does this page choose a string for me?
No. It shows the nearest note. Choose the guitar, bass or ukulele tuner if you want preset string targets and completion marks.
What does an octave number mean?
The number distinguishes pitches with the same letter name. A3 is 220 Hz at A4 = 440 Hz, while A4 is 440 Hz. Check the octave as well as the letter before increasing string tension.
Can I tune a violin or flute here?
Yes, if the note is between B0 and C6. Play one sustained note at a time. Very high notes above C6, such as the top notes of a piccolo, cannot be detected.
